Why Every Podcaster Needs an Email List — Not Just Downloads
Downloads are a vanity metric. Your email list is the one audience metric that nobody can take from you. Here's why it matters.
Podcasting is one of the fastest-growing mediums on the planet. It's also one of the least owned. Your show lives on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, YouTube — platforms you don't control, built on algorithms you don't understand, that change their rules whenever they want.
An email list is the only podcast audience that is truly yours.
The platform problem
Every platform that hosts your podcast is also competing for your listener's attention. Spotify recommends other shows the moment yours ends. Apple surfaces similar content in the sidebar. YouTube auto-plays something else. The listener experience is designed to keep people on the platform — not to connect them with you.
When a platform changes its algorithm, reduces podcast recommendations, or deprioritises independent creators, your download numbers move without you doing anything. This has happened repeatedly. It will happen again.
Downloads are not an audience
A download is a file request. It tells you someone, somewhere, pressed play on your episode. It doesn't tell you who. It doesn't give you any way to reach them. You cannot send a download a message. You cannot ask a download for feedback. You cannot invite a download to your live event.
50,000 downloads a month is impressive. But if you can't contact a single one of those people directly, you don't have an audience — you have a traffic statistic.
An email address is a direct line
When a listener gives you their email address, they're saying something specific: I trust you enough to invite you into my inbox. That's a far higher signal of intent than a play. And unlike a platform follower, it's permanent. No algorithm can suppress it. No platform can revoke it. If every podcast app disappeared tomorrow, your list would still exist.
What an email list lets you do
- Send episode notes directly to the people who care most
- Get feedback by asking real questions to people who actually respond
- Announce new seasons without relying on a platform to surface them
- Sell products, courses, or memberships to an audience that already trusts you
- Survive algorithm changes because your list doesn't care about the algorithm
The best time to start was your first episode
The second-best time is now. Every episode you publish without capturing emails is an episode you'll never recapture. Those listeners who discovered you and didn't subscribe are gone — they might come back, or they might have moved on.
PodSubs lets you claim your show and get your subscriber page live in under two minutes. There's no monthly fee to collect up to 500 subscriber emails. You say your URL on air, and the emails start coming in.
