Podnews reported on September 22 that Podtastic, an app that automatically skips podcast ads on-device, charges users $9.99 per month. Apple and Google's app stores can collect up to 30% of that subscription revenue — while the creators whose ads are skipped receive none of it.
The detail that should worry the industry is technical, not moral: on-device skipping is difficult for hosting platforms to block, because the ad is removed at playback time on the listener's own hardware. Server-side ad insertion, widely adopted as the answer to download-based ad skipping, does not solve this. If skipping apps scale, they could damage ad effectiveness metrics and renewal rates across the medium.
There is a counter-argument worth hearing. Ad-skipping demand is itself a signal — listeners are telling the market that some ad loads have become intrusive, which connects directly to the industry's own warnings about ad-load discipline. The sustainable response is probably better ad experiences, not just better ad blocking defenses.
