A six part podcast from BBC Sounds, The McGinty Mystery, is available now, PodcastingToday reported on October 29, 2026. Journalist Emily Wood investigates the 1935 murder of her great aunt, Eva Porter, also known as Mrs Eveline McGinty, who was stabbed to death in her London home on her daughter's thirteenth birthday. The case made national headlines at the time. Seventeen years later, Agatha Christie published Mrs McGinty's Dead, a Hercule Poirot novel about the murder of another Mrs McGinty. The podcast tests whether a connection exists. It does not claim one is proven.
Wood's investigation took two years. It uses original documents and witness statements that raise new questions about the case, and it looks at Eva Porter's life and the circumstances before her death. Guests include BBC Radio 2 presenter Jeremy Vine and Robert Thorogood, creator of Death in Paradise, alongside crime writers and Christie historians who speak about how Christie worked and where she found material.
WHY IT MATTERS: A family member with two years of original documents is a different kind of true crime host. The series pairs a personal stake with a documented research trail, and its central claim stays a question from start to finish. That restraint is the format lesson for independent makers working with real cases and real families.
The McGinty Mystery is available now on BBC Sounds.
